If you have risen to the position of leader then one of the core skills which you must have, is the ability to look at yourself and work hard to improve. This like Bryan Cumby who teach leadership often cite this as being one of the most critical traits of being a great leader. So many pick out various leadership skills as being important, but the actual ability to self develop is fundamental to everything that you do as a leader.
Across the world, all leaders have the ability to do this and here is exactly why this is so important.
When you are new to leadership you approach it with loads of energy, determined to make things better and determined to be the very best leader that you can be. Over time however, things change and you can get very set in your ways if you are not committed to continuously making changes to the way that you lead your team. Self analysis will enable you to continue to evolve and improve, and avoid becoming stale, and therefore ineffective.
The moment that you think you are the best that you can be, is the moment when you will begin to become a poorer leader. The best leaders are constantly checking themselves, constantly pushing to be better and constantly analyzing their weaknesses and looking to turn them into strengths. No leader, not even the biggest and most successful leaders in the world, rest on their laurels and assume that they are all that they can be, and this is a great trait of the very best leaders.
There are always new challenges to take on in the world of leadership, there are always different characters to manage and there are always different types of characters to take on. his is why we must always look to hone our skills and make sure that we are the very best leaders that we can be, if we cannot do this then we’ll find that those challenges get the best of us and that can damage our credentials and our reputation.
Leaders cannot afford to let the grass grow under their feet, they cannot assume that simply because they are in a leadership position that they will always stay there. Ultimately there is always someone who is next in line to take on the leadership role which you are occupying, and if you let slip, they may very well be on hand to make the most of it. Again this is why it is critical that we are constantly evolving and constantly working on ourselves, in order to be the very best leaders that we possibly can.
Constant introspection is required as a leader, to keep on evolving, to continuously improve and ultimately to avoid having to vacate that position for someone below you, who is prepared to work harder and smarter for the role.
