5 Tips For Making Your Home Safe For Kids

October 28, 2020 //  by Sophia//  Leave a Comment

Being a parent is one of the most exciting roles you’ll ever play. However, along with the thrill of getting to raise a little person on your own also comes a lot of worry and responsibility.

Since children can be accident-prone, it’s important that you make your home a risk-free environment. By practicing just a bit of caution, you can avoid all sorts of accidents that could have easily been avoided.

Take a look at some of the best ways to keep your home a safe place for your children.

Protect Against Sharp Corners

If there’s one thing that kids are good at, it’s bumping their heads. Whether they’re just learning to walk or well into their elementary years, kids tend to be magnets for running into objects that can seriously injure them.

One of the simplest ways to limit the amounts of bumps and bruises that acquire throughout the house is to put rubber guards on places like your countertops, coffee table, or anything else that has sharp corners that reach their height.

Block Off Staircases

Kids and staircases can be a dangerous combination. Guard against falls and tumbles by blocking off stairs with gates. Younger children are especially vulnerable to the dangers of falling downstairs.

However, even older kids can risk tripping down them. Make sure that you keep stairs clear of any obstructions that they could trip over, like rugs.

Keep Windows Closed

Even though you might like to think that kids would never do something as silly as jump out of a window, you’d be surprised what they’re capable of. Make sure that whenever your children are left unattended that the windows are closed.

Childproof them so that only adults are able to unlatch them. If keeping the home cool is an issue with the windows being closed, consider using window stops, which keep the windows open only to a certain amount. That way, you can still allow air to circulate without worrying about them being able to open further.

Use Slip Free Mats In The Tub

One of the leading causes of accidents in family homes is slipping during bathtime. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that even older children aren’t vulnerable to slipping in the tub.

It’s important that you line the tub floor with a rubber mat to avoid slipping. Although bathtime is considered a fun time, it can also be very dangerous.

Lock Cabinets

Kids are naturally curious creatures. It’s not uncommon for them to go into cabinets and cupboards they shouldn’t be in. It’s a good idea to lock any places that they could get into, which could contain harmful or dangerous objects.
