3 Ways Your Home Might Be Making You Sick And How To Fix It

July 25, 2020 //  by Sophia//  Leave a Comment

During the time of coronavirus, most people are staying home as a way to keep themselves and their loved ones healthy. However, there could be things lurking within your home that are keeping you from being as healthy as you could be in that space. But luckily, with a little home maintenance, you may be able to turn your home into the safe haven you want and need.

To help you in doing this, here are three ways that your home might be making you sick and how you can fit it.

Your Dirty Carpet

If you have a lot of carpeting in your home, you might want to start taking extra care of that material so it stays fresh and clean. Otherwise, it could be harmful to your health.

According to Alyssa Jung and Tina Donvito, contributors to TheHealthy.com, things like dust and dander can easily settle into your carpet and get kicked up into the air each time someone walks on it. Additionally, if you wear your shoes inside, you’re tracking in everything from the outside world that you’ve walked in or on. And if you have kids or pets, those contaminants aren’t just going to be staying on the carpet.

To combat this, make sure you’re taking your shoes off when you come into the house, especially into carpeted areas. And where you do have carpet or rugs, set a strict schedule for vacuuming and deep cleaning of those areas.

Water Issues And Mold

When mold is present in a home, it can create some major problems for everyone living there. HomeAdvisor.com shares that things like asthma, respiratory irritation, rashes, and more can all be symptoms of mold being present.

If you’ve been having issues with excess water or moisture in your home, there’s a possibility that mold could be present. In these instances, try to keep your home as dry as you can. And if you’re still having issues, consider getting a test for mold and indoor air quality to see if that’s why your family is getting sick.

Cleaning Chemicals

While keeping your home clean will help your family stay healthy, if you’re using harsh chemicals to do this cleaning, you might be causing harm in other ways.

According to WebMD, many household cleaning agents can be very harmful to your health if they’re not used correctly. And even if they are used correctly, the indoor toxins they release can still be irritating. So before you use a cleaning product, make sure it’s the most mild product you can use for whatever job you’re trying to tackle.

To help your family stay as healthy as possible, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you avoid problems within your home that could make you sick.
